What is rewilding?

Rewilding is the large-scale restoration of nature to the point where it can take care of itself – and us – again. By restoring habitats, natural processes and the diversity and abundance of native species, rewilding can boost biodiversity, help tackle the climate crisis, reduce the impact of extreme weather, give us cleaner water and air, improve our health and wellbeing, create jobs and support communities.

You can think of rewilding approaches as being on a ‘spectrum’. The illustration and diagram in the Rewilding Journeys toolkit can be used to get a sense of the range of rewilding and what it might look like in practice and how rewilding works with other land uses.

Start rewilding

Are you deciding whether to rewild your land, but don’t know where to start? This is the guide for you.

Rewilding can bring people together to find ways to work, live and prosper within healthy, flourishing ecosystems. Yet every site is different and each project is unique, so there isn’t a standard template we can all follow to deliver rewilding in Britain. However, there are a few broad considerations that apply to most land in Britain.

Drawing on practitioners’ experience within the Rewilding Network, this guide explores the main interventions that can help you get your rewilding dreams and ambitions off the ground.

Access support

We’ve collected a few materials to get you started, but when you join the Rewilding Network you’ll have access to many more resources including live webinars and guides, covering everything from monitoring to legislation to reintroductions. Plus, it’s free to join.

Financing rewilding on your land

We know that finding funds for your rewilding project can be a challenge in Britain. This note provides an overview of how to finance your rewilding project, from public funding schemes in your country, private investment such as nature-based enterprises and carbon and biodiversity payments and Rewilding Britain’s own Innovation and Challenge Funds.

  2. Knowledge exchange and collection
  3. Influence and visibility
