Welsh Rewilding Manifesto

The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world with just half (53%) of its biodiversity remaining, a figure that places us in the bottom 10% of the world’s countries for the state of our nature [1].

Welsh wildlife has declined by 20% since 1994 and 42% of Welsh plant species are found in fewer places than before. One in six of Wales’s species is at risk of extinction, including much-loved species such as the water vole and the fen orchid [2]. 

We need our government to make systemic and ambitious changes to reverse this decline and commit to ambitious landscape-scale nature recovery, by committing 30% of land and seas to nature recovery by 2030. 

By working with nature rather than against it, rewilding offers hope and the opportunity to give nature (and us) a fighting chance. 

We estimate less than 1% of Wales is currently rewilding and we need each political party to incorporate rewilding 30% of land and seas into their election promises and post-election delivery. We’ve laid out the key actions for political leaders in Wales and created the Welsh Rewilding Manifesto to enable our future government to act swiftly and decisively to protect, restore and rewild nature in Britain. 

Our 30% Welsh Rewilding Manifesto

Our manifesto has five key calls to action which will create positive and inclusive change:

1. Rapidly deliver 30% rewilding and process-led management that restores natural processes by 2030: Catalyse rewilding to help us transition to a nature-rich, low-carbon future while delivering real, locally-generated benefits today.
2. Expand nature-based jobs and businesses: Incentivise and invest in nature-based economies linked to rewilding as part of a just, green transition.
3. Make wild nature a right for all: Improve access to and restore our connection with wilder nature to benefit all our health and wellbeing.
4. Empower communities to lead rewilding: Place people and communities at the heart of decisions about our land and seas and its recovery.
5. Create a game-changing shift in rewilding funding and investment: Drive long-term, sustainable, public and private investment into 30% rewilding delivery within a financial system that values and invests in nature.

Mae angen i Lywodraeth Cymru Feddwl yn Fawr a Gweithredu’n Wyllt dros fyd natur, pobl a’r blaned.

Mae’r DU yn un o’r gwledydd mwyaf prin ei byd natur yn y byd gydag ychydig dros hanner (53%) o’i bioamrywiaeth ar ôl, ffigwr sy’n ein gosod ni yn y 10% isaf o wledydd y byd o ran cyflwr ein byd natur [1].

Mae bywyd gwyllt Cymru wedi lleihau 20% ers 1994 ac mae 42% o rywogaethau planhigion Cymru i’w canfod mewn llai o lefydd nag o’r blaen. Mae un o bob chwech o rywogaethau Cymru mewn perygl o ddiflannu, yn cynnwys rhywogaethau poblogaidd fel llygoden y dŵr a thegeirian y fign [2].

Mae angen i’n llywodraeth wneud newid systematig ac uchelgeisiol i wrthdroi’r dirywiad hwn ac ymrwymo i adfer byd natur ar raddfa dirwedd, drwy ymrwymo 30% o dir a môr i adfer byd natur erbyn 2030.

Rydym yn amcangyfrif bod llai nag 1% o Gymru yn dad-ddofi ac mae arnom angen i bob plaid wleidyddol ymgorffori dad-ddofi 30% o dir a môr i’w haddewidion etholiad a darpariaeth wedi etholiad. Rydym wedi gosod y camau gweithredu allweddol i arweinwyr gwleidyddol yng Nghymru ac wedi creu’r Maniffesto Dad-ddofi Cymru i alluogi ein llywodraeth nesaf i weithredu’n gyflym a phendant i amddiffyn, adfer a dad-ddofi byd natur ym Mhrydain.

Mae gan ein maniffesto bum galwad i weithredu allweddol a fydd yn creu newid cadarnhaol a chynhwysol:

1. Darparu 30% o reolaeth dad-ddofi cyflym a arweinir gan brosesau sy’n adfer prosesau naturiol erbyn 2030: Hybu dad-ddofi i’n helpu ni i drawsnewid i ddyfodol carbon isel, cyfoethog o ran byd natur wrth ddarparu buddion real sy’n cael eu cynhyrchu’n lleol heddiw.
2. Ehangu swyddi a busnesau ar sail byd natur: Cymell a buddsoddi mewn economïau ar sail byd natur sy’n gysylltiedig â throsglwyddo gwyrdd, cyfiawn.
3. Gwneud byd natur gwyllt yn hawl i bawb: Gwella mynediad i fyd natur mwy gwyllt ac adfer ein cysylltiad ag o er budd ein holl iechyd a’n llesiant.
4. Grymuso cymunedau i arwain ar ddad-ddofi: Gosod pobl a chymunedau wrth galon penderfyniadau ynghylch ein tir a’n môr a’i adferiad.
5. Creu newid a fydd yn drobwynt mewn cyllido a buddsoddi mewn dad-ddofi: Gyrru buddsoddiad hirdymor, cynaliadwy, cyhoeddus a phreifat i gyflawni 30% o ddad-ddofi o fewn system ariannol sy’n gwerthfawrogi byd natur ac yn buddsoddi ynddo.
