Spoonbill

Spoonbill

Date of disappearance: 1650 (last sighting in East Anglia)

Reason: Probably hunting and habitat loss

Special powers: Spoonbills have a remarkable feeding method, opening the castanet-like ends of their beaks and sweeping them from side to side through the water, until they feel something touch the inside, whereupon they clamp them shut.

Suitability for reintroduction: Spoonbills have already begun breeding occasionally in Norfolk.
